Charles Ives quotes music from popular material together with concert pieces which have programmatic signifi-cance.”; in Part 5, “Early Twentieth-Century Practices in the Use of Quotation”: “The very same motive (Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5) is quoted by Ives in the Concord Sonata and is used as a cyclic device to depict fate and the character of Beethoven himself’; and in Parts 7-10, “Charles Ives' Use of Quotation.”
